Steps To Being Somebody

There are two fundamental steps to being treated like somebody: look like somebody and act like somebody. Either action alone won’t convince people for long. They are both needed, but if you can only manage to pull off one of them, you’re headed in the right direction.

Can you imagine coming to the end of the line and knowing you spent your chance just floating along? What if instead of being a victim of our own excuses, or others’ pre-made, one-size-fits-all excuses, we lived our lives on purpose? Do you really have to work twice as hard to be twice as successful, or would 10% more do the trick? It shouldn’t be difficult to come up with a reasonable list describing your life’s purpose.

You can probably come up with several satisfactory reasons for working the job you have, living in the home you do, or even acting the way you do. But what if those purposes were met? What if your goals were achieved? Do you have a followup list, or have you at least considered that a re-examination will be necessary at that time, or are you hoping you never reach those goals just so you have a rabbit to chase?

Taking this definition into account, it should narrow the list of people that are lucky to have the things they have. More interesting, we all know at least one person that’s quick to tell us “if it weren’t for bad luck” they’d have “no luck at all.” The more memorable times you’ve heard this is when the “unlucky” person was fired because they laid out of work one too many Mondays. Or when they received a speeding ticket just as the Christmas they hadn’t saved for anyway was right around the corner. Maybe lady luck’s influence isn’t as common as we let on.

What do I deserve? I ask myself that question but I haven’t come up with an answer. There are a few things that I feel I’m reasonably entitled to. But, if I didn’t receive them, would being deserving of them make any difference? I doubt it.

If anything, I’m probably doing quite a bit better than I actually deserve. It’s easy to get philosophical about what one “deserves” but it’s a moot point in the end. If I don’t get what I think I deserve does that make me a victim? I don’t like the idea of that. The dictionary lists “loser” as a synonym for victim. After all, if you’re a victim something has been taken or withheld from you.

There’s another question I ask myself: Does a bear deserve a trout from the stream?
